Any surgical procedure or injury involving incisions through multiple layers of skin, fat, muscle, and possibly glandular tissue will leave some form of scar. The degree of scarring may also be influenced by external factors such as age, complexion, genetics, and lifestyle.
Following cosmetic surgery, scars may appear most visible for two to three months, typically taking around 12 to 24 months to fully heal and become less visible.
The healing process can be broken down into three phases:
- Inflammatory Phase (12 hours to seven days): Beginning around 12 hours post-surgery and continuing for approximately seven days, this phase involves the release of growth factors and white blood cells to aid in wound closure and set the groundwork for subsequent phases.
- Proliferation Phase (Day seven to 21 days): During this period, the skin prepares to develop a scaffold for the formation of lasting scar tissue, involving the activation of fibroblasts and the initiation of angiogenesis.
- Maturation & Remodeling Phase (Three weeks to one year): Starting from around week three, the body enters the remodeling phase, rebuilding collagen and reshaping scar tissue. While scars may initially appear reddish and raised within the first three months, they gradually fade and become flatter over time.
This final phase generally presents as the optimal time to begin scar therapy treatments, with the aim of accelerating healing and helping to further minimise scar visibility.
To optimise the healing process of your scars, there are various steps you can take before and after surgery to speed up recovery, reduce the risk of wound complications, and address the appearance of surgical scars. Some of these include:
- Stop smoking
- Reduce alcohol intake
- Eat a balanced and healthy diet
- Stay well hydrated
- Prioritise rest and recovery
- Avoid sun exposure directly over incisions
