Blepharoplasty

Over time the orbital region of the face may experience loss of elasticity, fat pad descent and orbital bone resorption. This can result in skin laxity, fine lines, wrinkles and hollowing of the eyes. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in Brisbane involves removing lax or stretched skin, and pockets of fat, from your eyelid area.

Blepharoplasty
Brisbane

An upper blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at contracting underlying tissues and removing excess upper eyelid skin, helping to address hooded or lax eyelids, asymmetry, and vision impairment caused by upper eyelid laxity.

Dr Ian Chinsee is a cosmetic doctor who performs an array of cosmetic surgeries and procedures, including blepharoplasty of the upper eyelid.

Everything You Need to Know About
Blepharoplasty Brisbane

When it comes to blepharoplasty surgery, there are several factors that need to be considered, including who is a good candidate, risks & recovery times, costs and other treatments that you may complement upper blepharoplasty surgery.

  • During an upper blepharoplasty procedure, Dr Chinsee will create an incision along the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and if required, underlying muscles may be adjusted to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures. An upper blepharoplasty can be performed under either local or general anaesthesia, with the procedure typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes.

  • The total costs involved in blepharoplasty may be different for every patient. In general, this will depend on the following important factors:

Cosmetic doctor fees:  A blepharoplasty procedure starts at $3,300 which includes doctor’s fees, post-operative appointments, four Healite II LED sessions and iS Clinical eye kit.

The type of anaesthesia: The procedure is usually performed using local anaesthetic. In some cases, Dr Chinsee may decide to use general anaesthesia.

Hospital fees: This includes the fees of the operating theatre, equipment, and staff. The total fee will depend on the length of the surgery.

Other costs: These include the prescribed medications and medical tests.

  • Dr Chinsee may recommend combining other modalities to address patient concerns. Other procedures that a Blepharoplasty procedure can be performed alongside are AccuTite, Morpheus8 RF Microneedling and Exion RF Ultrasound.

    AccuTite:

AccuTite uses targeted radio-frequency energy to the eye area to help contract the underlying tissues, while reducing lax skin in the area. Dr Chinsee may recommend an upper blepharoplasty with AccuTite to address the lower lid.

    Morpheus8 RF Microneedling:

Morpheus8 RF Microneedling combines radio-frequency energy and microneedling to help stimulate collagen and elastin as well as contract the fibres of the fibroseptal network. This may result in a reduction of lax tissues around the eye.

    Exion RF Ultrasound:

Exion RF Ultrasound uses targeted radio-frequency and ultrasound energy to help stimulate collagen and elastin production as well as assist in increasing the hyaluronic acid production within the skin.

Ideal Candidates for a

Blepharoplasty

During your consultation, Dr Ian Chinsee will assess you to see if you’re a suitable candidate for this cosmetic procedure. A suitable candidate for blepharoplasty is someone who is looking to address the appearance of their periorbital region. They must:

  • Be aged 18+

  • In good physical and mental health

  • Have realistic expectations

  • Have excess skin of the upper eyelids

They may:

  • Have excess fat above the eyes

  • Have upper eye skin that obstructs eyesight

  • Have creases, wrinkles or fine lines around the eyes

Each treatment plan is tailored specifically to each individual patient. Dr Chinsee will create a personalised plan specifically for you, which may incorporate a blend of surgical and/or non-surgical upper eyelid procedures.

Objectives of a

Blepharoplasty

The objectives of blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) may include:

  • Altered appearance: An upper blepharoplasty may alter the appearance of the eyes by removing excess upper eyelid skin.

  • Symmetry: An upper blepharoplasty may help address the symmetry of your eye shape.

  • Correction of functional issues: In cases where excess skin or fat deposits impair vision, an upper blepharoplasty may help restore peripheral vision and alleviate discomfort or irritation caused by excess upper eyelid tissue.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR
BLEPHAROPLASTY CONSULT

A consultation is much more than an obligatory step before proceeding with blepharoplasty surgery. It allows you to meet the doctor performing the procedure as well as the medical team involved. A blepharoplasty consultation provides you with the opportunity to learn more about the procedure itself, its associated risks, and potential complications. It also enables you to discuss in detail the aesthetic results you wish to achieve, distinguishing between realistic and unattainable outcomes given your personal circumstances.

  • All patients seeking blepharoplasty surgery must have a referral from their GP, complete the body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations before booking a surgery date.

Upon arrival, our receptionist will ensure all necessary forms are completed. They will also conduct 2D and 3D imaging prior to your consultation with Dr Chinsee.

During your first consultation, Dr Chinsee will discuss your medical history, your desired aesthetic outcomes, and provide you with enough information to make an informed decision about whether or not to have surgery, explaining the blepharoplasty procedure in detail, including both surgical and non-surgical methods, recovery times, and the potential risks and complications associated with blepharoplasty surgery.

Finally, in collaboration with you, Dr Chinsee will develop a surgical plan tailored to your goals.

    Our blepharoplasty surgical quotes include:

    • Operating Doctor

    • Assistant (if required)

    • Hospital and anaesthetic

    • Compression garment(s) (if required)

    • Direct contact with a Nurse

    • One year of postoperative follow-up appointments, including dressing-change appointments

Recovery & care from

A Blepharoplasty

The recovery period will vary from patient-to-patient. Most patients may experience some pain, pressure, vision changes and/or light sensitivity, generally lasting up to one week. We prescribe oral pain medication after your procedure to assist with pain and discomfort. Within a week, most patients can expect to return to work and their daily routine, provided they avoid strenuous activities.

Following your blepharoplasty procedure, patients will require suture removal at week one; some patients will require additional appointments. Out of town patientswill be provided with a letter containing detailed dressing change instructions to give to their GP if they cannot attend follow-up appointments at the Brisbane clinic. All quotes include four 4 x Healite II LED sessions (one to two per week).

Major swelling usually subsides within a couple of weeks, however can last up to six weeks.

You will have post operative appointments with Dr Chinsee at week six and three months. These appointments can be conducted via our virtual clinic or in person at our Brisbane clinic, located in Fortitude Valley.

FAQs

  • All surgeries, including blepharoplasty, come with risks. Possible risks associated with blepharoplasty include bleeding or infection, allergic reactions to medical materials, changes in facial sensation, temporary or permanent areas of numbness, skin laxity, pigmentation changes, bruising, swelling, discolouration, skin blistering, asymmetry, excess skin excision, dry eyes, ptosis, scarring, visual changes, and unsatisfactory results.

Our cosmetic doctor, Dr Ian Chinsee is experienced in performing blepharoplasty surgery. For more information regarding risks & complications, please schedule a consultation with Dr Ian Chinsee.

  • The results of the blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) can last for several years. It is important to keep in mind that the skin in your eyelid area will still change as you age. Other factors, such as sun exposure and lifestyle, can also affect your results. It may be recommended by your doctor to combine blepharoplasty eyelid surgery with non-surgical modalities like Morpheus8 RF microneedling, Exion RF Ultrasound or AccuTite to further prolong results.

  • Dr Chinsee will create the incision along the natural crease of the eyelids. This helps to conceal the scar, although there is a risk it may still be slightly visible. While Dr Chinsee will use surgical techniques to reduce scarring, the appearance of your scars ultimately comes down to how your body heals, genetics and post care. Your surgical scars should fade over time with appropriate postoperative care and can be further minimised with post-procedure treatment.

There are additional treatments offered at the clinic in Brisbane, like RF microneedling and Healite II LED therapy, that can help reduce the appearance of scarring.

  • You may not be a good fit for a blepharoplasty procedure if:

    • You are prone to bleeding

    • You have a serious eye condition

    • You have an allergy to the anaesthetic

    • You have poor wound-healing ability

    • You have unrealistic expectations
