Surgical Consultations

During the first part of your consultation, Dr. Chinsee will discuss your medical history. Lab testing or a medical evaluation may be required to establish your level of health. For example, if you are a smoker, Dr Ian Chinsee will advise you to stop smoking well in advance to help reduce the likelihood of post-operative complications. Dr Ian Chinsee may request a nicotine test to ensure all traces of nicotine are out of your system. If you are undergoing breast surgery and are over the age of 40, a mammogram will be required.

Dr Ian Chinsee will discuss your surgical expectations and explain the procedure in detail, including surgical methods, recovery times and the potential risks and complications. A physical examination will be conducted during which Dr Ian Chinsee will take measurements and photographs. If you are seeing Dr Ian Chinsee for breast augmentation surgery, you will try on different implant sizes.

Finally, in collaboration with you, your doctor will develop a surgical plan tailored to your appearance and personal circumstances.

During the second consultation, Dr. Chinsee will discuss your formal surgical quote, pre and post-operative information, and will revise consent forms. The process of giving informed consent is not just a physical document that you sign. It is a process of gathering information and educating yourself, so you can safely, and with full understanding, say that you agree to all aspects of surgery. The process of giving consent can take days, weeks, months, or even years. If you have any questions or concerns after your consultation, we encourage you to contact us.

After your second consultation, there is a one week cooling-off period before you can book surgery or make any form of payment. Surgery cannot be booked until consent forms are signed.

For all surgical consultations, the following documents are required:

• GP referral

• Previous operation report if you have had previous surgery on that area

• Ultrasound within 12 months if you have had previous surgery on that area

• A recent mammogram if you are over 40+

You will also need to complete the following forms prior to your consultation

• New patient form (Please note: If you have screened positive on your BDD form, you will be referred to a psychologist before proceeding with a second consultation.)

• Body Dysmorphia form

A consultation is much more than an obligatory step before surgery. It allows you to meet the doctor and staff who will be involved with your procedure. The consultation provides you with an ideal opportunity to learn more about the procedure itself, with the associated risks and complications. It allows you to discuss, in detail, what results you wish to achieve, what results are realistic, and what results are unattainable, given your personal circumstances.

All patients seeking cosmetic surgery must have a referral, preferably from their usual general practitioner or if that is not possible, from another general practitioner or other specialist medical practitioner. The referring medical practitioner must work independently of the medical practitioner who will perform the surgery and must not perform cosmetic surgery or non-surgical cosmetic procedures themselves. This must be emailed through prior to your appointment. If patients do not supply a referral, their consultation will be rescheduled or cancelled.

A patient seeking cosmetic surgery must have at least two pre-operative consultations prior to booking in a surgery date. The medical practitioner who will be performing the surgery will assess you for any underlying psychological conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which may make you an unsuitable candidate for surgery. If you have screened positive on your BDD form, you will be referred to a psychologist before proceeding with a second consultation.

If you are an out of town patient or your first appointment is a virtual appointment you will be required to send through photos prior to your appointment.

The cost of an initial surgical consultation with Dr Ian Chinsee is $175. This booking fee is paid at the time of booking to secure your desired appointment time. The initial consultation fee is non-refundable, and rescheduling requires 48 hours notice. This consultation fee is not deducted from the cost of surgery if you decide to proceed.

A second consultation is required and is included in your initial payment. If you require any additional consultations after your second, this will be charged at an additional $100 per consultation within 12 months. After 12 months you will need to re-book and pay for a new consultation.

Each patient requires an individualised surgical assessment. During your initial consultation, Dr. Chinsee will discuss risks and possible complications, recovery, possible revision, surgical and non-surgical treatment options and tailor a surgical plan suited to your needs and aesthetic goals. After your consultation, a formal quote will be provided to you. This quote will be valid for three months, unless otherwise stated.

Our surgical pricing structures are fully inclusive to cover all fees, including:

• Operating Doctor

• Assistant (if required)

• Hospital Fees

• Anaesthetic Fees

• Implants (if required)

• Implant sizers (if required)

• Keller funnel (if required)

• Compression garment(s) (if required)

• Direct contact with a Nurse

• One year of postoperative follow-up appointments, including dressing-change appointments

• Scar therapy products (iS Clinical Super Serum, iS Clinical Sheald Recovery, Silicone tape or Silicone Gel) (if required)

• 4 x Healite II LED sessions (if required)

• Please make sure you have completed and submitted all information requested at the time of booking before your appointment, including your body dysmorphia questionnaire (BDD).

• If you have had previous breast surgery please ensure you have your previous op reports and a recent ultrasound report.

• You are encouraged to bring a friend or family member for support.

• Wear a firm fitted t-shirt to try on over the breast implant sizers to give you an indication of how your implants will look in clothes.

• There is a limited range of implant sizes and profiles that will work with your body, and importantly, there is a maximum size implant that you can safely choose. This is determined by your anatomy and will be different from other people you talk to.

• Find some ‘Wish Pics’ to bring along to your consultation. These will provide an indication of the type of look you want to achieve. These pictures should reflect some one who is similar to your body shape and size.

• However, remember, your ‘Wish Pics’ are only ‘Wish Pics’, and similar results may not be attainable due to your unique anatomy. For example, although cleavage may be important to you, if your breasts are wide-set, you may have limited success in achieving this goal with surgery. It is generally your anatomy that determines the amount of cleavage achievable. Breast implants enhance what your pre-existing anatomy, so if your breasts are wide-set, they will still be wide-set after the procedure. Or if they are low-set, they will still be low-set after the procedure. A breast augmentation will not physically change the location of the breasts on your chest – it will result in a larger version of what you already have.

• If you were uncertain about your chosen implant size at the first consult, this can be finalised at your second consultation.

• Finally, this is elective cosmetic surgery. You should not feel pressured or rushed into booking surgery.
