Everything You Need to Know About
Removal & Replacement Brisbane
When it comes to removal and replacement surgery, there are several factors that need to be considered, including desired results and breast implant selection. The type of implant that is chosen will depend on your desired outcome and your natural breast anatomy.
-
Breast implants come in two main shapes: round and teardrop. The choice affects the final appearance, and Dr. Ian Chinsee will help determine the best option based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Round Implants: These are symmetrical and provide volume both above and below the nipple, creating a fuller look with more cleavage and lift. They’re ideal for a more augmented appearance.
Teardrop Implants: Also known as anatomical implants, they mimic the natural breast shape with more volume at the base and less at the top, offering a more natural look. They’re suitable for patients with minimal breast tissue or those needing a teardrop shape.
Profiles and Projections
Implant profiles affect projection relative to the base width. Options include moderate plus, high, and ultra-high profiles. Implants with a narrower base project more, while those with a wider base project less.
Surface Texture
Smooth Implants: These have a glossy surface, allowing free movement within the breast tissue.
Textured Implants: Featuring a rough surface, they adhere better to surrounding tissue, reducing the chance of shifting.
Size Considerations
Implant sizes range from 125cc to 1060cc. The same size can look different on various individuals due to differences in natural breast tissue. Dr. Chinsee will evaluate your measurements and desired look to recommend suitable sizes, but the final choice is yours.
Lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, should also influence your decision. Dr. Chinsee will consider these factors to ensure your chosen size aligns with your daily activities.
-
Removal and replacement surgery may be combined with other procedures, such as a Breast Lift and/or Fat Transfer.
Although a removal and replacement may assist with lost volume it can not reposition the breast tissue.
Patients may choose to undergo a breast lift with the insertion of implants to create the look of a fuller more lifted bust. Breast lift and removal and replacement of implants may be undertaken during the same procedure in the right candidate. If a patient has a considerable amount of natural breast tissue or is diagnosed with severe ptosis, an explant and mastopexy may be performed first, and augmentation secondary.

Correcting Changes Due to Weight Fluctuations or Ageing: Adjusting the implants to accommodate changes in body weight, skin elasticity, or ageing.
Updating Implant Type or Size: Replacing current implants with new ones to better meet updated aesthetic goals or to incorporate advancements in implant technology, including changes in size, shape, or type.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR
REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT CONSULT
A consultation is a crucial step in preparing for removal & replacement breast surgery, offering more than just a procedural formality. It provides an opportunity to meet the doctor and surgical team, gain in-depth information about the procedure, understand potential risks and complications, and discuss your goals. This meeting helps clarify achievable results and address any unrealistic expectations based on your specific circumstances.
Before proceeding with cosmetic surgery, patients need to obtain a referral from their GP, complete a body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire, and attend at least two pre-operative consultations. Additionally, please bring any previous surgical operation reports and an updated ultrasound.
-
Upon arrival, a receptionist will assist you with the necessary forms and conduct your 2D and 3D imaging before seeing Dr. Chinsee.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Chinsee will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals. He will provide comprehensive information about the removal and replacement procedure, including different implant types, surgical techniques, recovery times, and potential risks and complications. The consultation will also involve a physical examination, where Dr. Chinsee will take measurements and allow you to try on various implant sizes and shapes to find the best option for you.
Dr. Chinsee will then work with you to develop a personalised surgical plan tailored to your objectives.
-
Your second consultation can be scheduled at least seven days following your initial visit. During your second consultation, Dr. Chinsee will review your detailed surgical plan, provide information on pre- and post-operative procedures, and address any questions related to your consent forms. This is also a good time to ask any additional questions.
After the second consultation, a one-week cooling-off period is required before you can schedule surgery or make any payments. Surgery can only be booked once you have had your second consultation and once the consent forms have been signed.

Recovery & care from a
Removal & Replacement
Recovery varies from patient to patient. Patients can experience pain, aches, pressure and discomfort, generally lasting up to two weeks. We prescribe oral pain medication after your procedure to assist with pain and discomfort.
Following the operation, patients will require a dressing change at one week intervals for a period of three weeks, some patients will require additional dressing changes. Out of town patients will be provided with a letter containing detailed dressing change instructions to give to their GP if they cannot attend dressing change appointments at Dr Chinsee’s rooms in Brisbane.
Most patients should expect to take around one to two weeks off work. Patients with administrative roles can usually return to work after one week; however, more physically demanding jobs will require a longer recovery period. Patients can usually return to their normal activities, including gym exercises from week six.
There may be swelling and bruising after the procedure. Major swelling usually subsides by three months, and the final results are noticeable at around the one-year mark. A compression bra will need to be worn continuously for six-to-twelve weeks after surgery.
We will schedule post-operative appointments throughout the following year. These appointments can be conducted virtually or in person at our rooms in Brisbane.

FAQs

Scarring is an inevitable outcome following surgery. Whenever a surgical procedure requires cutting through multiple layers of skin, a scar will form. Our doctors aim to minimise the scar’s size and visibility by utilising appropriate surgical techniques. Some or all of the existing surgical scar will be excised so that the skin closure is fresh skin to fresh skin.
Ultimately the appearance of your scar comes down to how your body heals, genetics and post care. Your surgical scars should fade over time with appropriate postoperative care and can be further minimised with post-procedure treatment.
Please visit Scarring After Surgery for more information.

Following breast implant removal and replacement surgery, several risks and complications may arise. These include:
Infection: Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection, which can be managed with antibiotics but may require further treatment if severe.
Capsular Contracture: The formation of scar tissue around the implant can cause it to harden and become painful, potentially affecting the appearance and feel of the breast.
Bleeding or Hematoma: Accumulation of blood within the breast tissue can cause swelling and require additional procedures to manage.
Implant Rupture or Leakage: Although rare, new implants can rupture or leak, necessitating further surgery to replace them.
Changes in Sensation: Alterations in nipple or breast sensation can occur, ranging from increased sensitivity to numbness.
Scarring: Surgical incisions can leave scars, which may vary in appearance and may be more noticeable depending on the healing process.
Seroma: Fluid accumulation around the implant can cause swelling and may need to be drained.
Displacement or Asymmetry: The new implants may shift or settle differently, potentially leading to uneven results that may require corrective surgery.
Poor Wound Healing: Some patients may experience delayed or problematic wound healing, which could affect recovery time and results.
Anesthesia Risks: As with any surgery requiring anesthesia, there are inherent risks associated with its use, including reactions or complications.
Allergic Reactions: Rarely, patients might have allergic reactions to materials used in the implants or medications.
Discussing these risks with your doctor will help you understand how they apply to your specific situation and what steps can be taken to minimise them.

Breast surgery carries potential risks that include bleeding or infection, accumulation of fluid around the implant, allergic reactions to medical materials, changes in breast and nipple sensation, temporary or permanent numbness in specific areas, wrinkling of the skin over the implant, keloid or hypertrophic scar formation, capsular contracture, improper implant size, implant rupture or deflation, breast asymmetry, calcium deposits in the scar capsule surrounding the implant, granulomas, difficulties with breastfeeding, diminished effectiveness of breast cancer screening, implant movement, the need for further surgical procedures to address complications, anaesthesia risks such as allergic reactions or potentially fatal cardiovascular complications, and blood clots in the deep veins of the legs, which can be life-threatening if they migrate to the lungs or brain. It is crucial to discuss these risks thoroughly with a qualified doctor prior to undergoing breast augmentation surgery.
Major swelling usually subsides by three months, and the final results are noticeable at around the one-year mark. A compression bra will need to be worn continuously for six weeks following surgery.

You may want to replace your implants if your existing implants have developed asymmetry, display ptosis (sag), feel painful or hard, or if you desire a change in size.
-
No. Removal and replacement of breast implants is more complex than a primary breast augmentation. It requires a thorough consultation, surgical plan, and additional time in theatre. We recommend you book in a consultation with one of our doctors for additional information.
-
The ideal candidate for removal and replacement of breast implants is someone who:
Has clear goals and aesthetic outcomes
Has a good understanding of what can and cannot be achieved with revision surgery
Is considered to be
in overall good mental and physical health
Has realistic wants and expectations
-
Implants can be replaced for several different reasons: Rupture, capsular contracture, dissatisfaction with overall result, or a change in aesthetic appearance.
-
If you don’t want your breast implants replaced, the implants can be removed completely (known as an explant). Depending on the skin quality and laxity, excess skin may be removed by performing a breast lift at the time of the explant surgery.
-
It is recommended that you wait at least six months before undergoing any revision surgery to allow the tissue and skin adequate time to heal. We also recommend you book a consultation with one of our doctors to discuss your options.
