What You Need to Know About Explant Surgery
In recent years, more and more women have been exploring the option of explant surgery — the removal of breast implants — for both health and personal reasons. Whether you're considering it for aesthetic, physical, or emotional reasons, understanding the process and what to expect is essential.
Why Do Women Choose to Explant?
There are many reasons someone may choose to have their implants removed. These include:
Health concerns, such as Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, or skin rashes.
Capsular contracture, where the tissue around the implant hardens and causes discomfort or changes in appearance.
Implant rupture or leakage.
A shift in personal values or aesthetic preferences — simply wanting to return to a more natural shape.
Lifestyle changes, such as a focus on wellness, exercise, or ageing gracefully.
Whatever the reason, it’s a deeply personal decision — and one that deserves expert support and understanding.
What Happens During Explant Surgery?
Explant surgery is performed under general anaesthetic by Dr Ian Chinsee and typically involves:
Removal of the implant: Dr Chinsee will take out the implant, sometimes along with the surrounding capsule (scar tissue) — this is known as an en bloc or total capsulectomy (however this is not always the case and will be discussed during consult)
Evaluation of the breast tissue: This ensures there are no abnormalities or signs of inflammation, rupture, or silicone leakage.
Optional procedures: Some patients opt for a breast lift (mastopexy) at the same time to restore shape and volume.
The entire procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and can take 1–3 hours depending on complexity.
Recovery & Healing
Recovery from explant surgery can vary, but most patients experience:
Mild to moderate discomfort for the first few days
Swelling and bruising for up to a few weeks
A feeling of lightness or relief post-op, especially for those who had larger implants
Most people return to light activity within a week and resume normal routines (including exercise) within 4–6 weeks. Dr Chinsee will give you specific post-operative care instructions, including wound care and support garment recommendations.
